How many times have you heard something like this?
If you haven’t heard of [insert name of fantastic person here], you should check them out… they’re incredible!
Mighty Fine People is a celebration of those individuals. I want to share the stories of amazing human beings who’ve enriched our world without most of us even knowing about them. They aren’t necessarily unsung, but their songs deserve to be heard by many more of us.
Who are they? Teachers, artists, scientists, writers, public servants… people from all over the world, in all walks of life, both in and out of the public eye. Whether through raw talent, hard work, tenacity, big-heartedness, luck, or some combination of all of the above, they have lived extraordinary lives. They’re not perfect, of course, and I can’t vouch for every aspect of their character, but each of them has brought something special into the world. And they deserve to be honored, both for their sake and ours. It’s good to remember that we have the capacity to do great things.
My intent isn’t to invoke Pangloss or P0llyanna. But there’s too much negativity in our news and our politics and our lives. In fact, I started this site as an antidote to my own growing cynicism. It’s hard not to feel helpless and bitter every time the news reminds us of how selfish, corrupt, and murderous we can be as a species. When we see stories about crime and greed and war, it’s easy to forget we’re also capable of astonishing kindness and scientific advances and works of art.
My hope is that these short profiles will whet your appetite and encourage you to get to know these people better on your own, and to spread the word about them. I hope that you’re inspired by their stories and that you gain some insights into their lives and their impacts. Most of all, I want to spread some awareness and positivity in a medium that seems to thrive on spreading ignorance and hostility.
As Neil DeGrasse Tyson said of Jan Oort, the brilliant 20th century Dutch astronomer who helped us understand the nature of our own Milky Way galaxy and where comets come from…
Does the fact that most of us know the names of mass murderers, but have never heard of Jan Oort, say anything about us?
– Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Cosmos: Episode 3
Hi, I’m Devon Biere. I live in Lorain, Ohio with my wife and two kids. I’m not a journalist or trained writer… both of which are surely evident throughout this site. I’m just a regular guy who loves to read, learn, and grow.
I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio where I had the incredible good luck to attend the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA). I studied Music Education and Mechanical Engineering (briefly) at Ohio State, but somehow fell into a career in software development. I still love to write and arrange music when I get time, although my few pro credits are long behind me.
